Medicare IRMAA Explained

High earners will have to pay more than the standard Medicare Part B and Part D premium. This extra amount, called a “surcharge”, is based on the income you report on your tax return two year ago.

Medicare IRMAA Amounts for 2024

The Social Security Administration sets the IRMAA amounts each year. For 2024, the IRMAA amounts are listed below.

How to Appeal IRMAA

Certain life-changing events allow you to appeal your Medicare IRMAA. These include:

  • Marriage or Divorce
  • Death of your Spouse
  • Work Stoppage or Reduction
  • Loss of Income-Producing Property
  • Loss of Pension Income
  • Employer Settlement Payment

If you would like to submit an IRMAA appeal, you have to submit form SSA-44.

FAQs

Does Medicare IRMAA ever go away?

Since the government has access to your tax filings, your IRMAA amount will automatically recalculate each year. If you fall below the minimum threshold your IRMAA will be removed.
