Having to go to the hospital can be one of the most expensive things that ever happens to you. Here at The Medicare Family, our job is to make sure that you’re aware of the gaps in your coverage and highlight ways for you to fix them.
Under Original Medicare, Inpatient Hospital stays are covered under Part A. If you are kept overnight in the hospital without being admitted (this is called being “under observation”) you will be billed under Part B.
The difference here is significant. Part A has a deductible of $1,676 (2025) and then no additional costs for 60 days in the hospital. If you’re kept under observation, Part B will charge you 20% of the cost.
Hospital insurance can be especially useful for our clients who have Medicare Advantage plans. Typically these plans will have a per day copay in the hospital of $200-400 per day for the first several days.
With a hospital indemnity plan, you can match up the benefit to your co-pays. If you have to pay $1400 in co-pays for your hospital stay, your hospital plan would write you a check for that same amount.
This is a really good option for Medicare Advantage enrollees because it removes one of the biggest caps in coverage for a very affordable price.

Recently many insurance companies have begun to offer guaranteed acceptance for certain ages. If you are age 64 through age 79, you may be able to get a plan without answering any health questions.
Plans that don’t ask health questions will have a 6 month exclusionary period for pre-existing conditions.
Guaranteed Acceptance May be Available!
Certain companies waive health qualifications for certain age ranges.
In 2025, some of the most competitive companies for Hospital Indemnity insurance are:
Typically between $20-40 per month depending on your age, location, benefit amount, and additional riders added onto the policy.
Typically no, you do not. A supplement (like Plan G) will fully cover your Hospital deductible. However, there are non-medical costs that need to be paid when you’re sick, and a hospital indemnity plan could help with those expenses.
Protect yourself from hospital charges by getting a hospital indemnity plan that pays you directly. For a small monthly premium, you can fill one of the biggest gaps in Original Medicare and a Medicare Advantage plan.
