Because Original Medicare does not offer dental coverage, we frequently receive calls asking about what options are available for dental insurance. We’ve looked through many, many plans over the years and we’ve given a breakdown of our favorites below.
It’s important to appreciate that in order for dental insurance to be worth your money, it has to offer coverage for “the big stuff”. You don’t get dental insurance for your $100 yearly cleaning…it wouldn’t be worth $30-$60/month. You get dental insurance for your $1,000 root canal bill or your $2,500 crowns.
Based on our experience, the following are our Top 3 dental plans for Seniors.
Manhattan Life’s dental product includes dental, vision, and hearing all into one plan. Our favorite part of this coverage is that it offers up to a $3,000 annual maximum and up to 80% coverage for majors services like root canals and crowns.
Other great features of the Manhattan Dental plan:
No Networks on Manhattan or Ameritas Dental Plans
You will get cheaper rates by going to Dentist that are within their networks, but you are not required to.
Ameritas offers 3 versions of its PrimeStar dental plans: PrimeStar Value, PrimeStar Access, and PrimeStar Total, each with different pricing and coverage levels. Ameritas also has a Vision rider that you can add to each plan for additional coverage.
Features we like about the Ameritas PrimeStar Total Plan:

Mutual of Omaha is well known for being one of the largest Medicare Supplement insurance companies. They also offer a competitive dental product as well.
Features we like about the Mutual Dental Preferred plan:
No, Medicare does not include coverage for any routine dental services. If you would like this coverage, you must either get a stand-alone plan or get it from a Medicare Advantage plan that offers dental benefits.
Most Medicare Advantage plans will include at least some dental coverage. Medicare Supplements do not include ANY dental coverage.
For most, the best way to get dental coverage is with a stand-alone dental plan.
So there you have it. Our 3 favorite dental plans for seniors as of 2024 are from Manhattan Life, Ameritas, and Mutual of Omaha. Each of these plans is different and the coverages and prices will vary from state to state.
