New To Medicare Timeline

When starting Medicare, your enrollment windows for all of your other Medicare plans are dependent on your Part B effective date. It just so happens that most people will start Part B on the first of the month they turn age 65. For others, this could be at age 70, 75, 80 or whenever they decide to retire and/or leave employer coverage.

6 Months BEFORE Part B Effective Date – This is when you can first sign up for your Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan. Coverage cannot begin until your Part B is effective, but by enrolling you are locking in your price. Note that you do NOT have to have enrolled in Part B yet to sign up for your supplement.

3 Months BEFORE Part B Effective Date – This is when you can sign up for your Original Medicare Part A & B using one of the methods explained on our Applying For Medicare page.

Once You Have Your Medicare Card – As soon as you have your red, white, and blue Medicare card that shows your Medicare number along with your Part A & Part B effective dates, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage or Part D Prescription Drug Plan.

Medicare Part B Effective Date – All of the plans that you sign up for above will begin on this date. Your Part B effective date will always be the 1st of the month.

3 Months AFTER Part B Effective Date – You can still sign up for a Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan for 3 months after your Part B effective date, but if you already enrolled in a plan you cannot change it during this period.

6 Months AFTER Part B Effective Date – You can still sign up for a Medicare Supplement plan or change your Supplement plan for 6 months after your Part B date and have no health questions.

If you miss your enrollment windows, you may lose your guaranteed insurability and even have to pay penalties. Don’t delay! Reach out to us so that we can get this process started sooner rather than later.

The Medicare Family made the difficult choices seem easy, and no pressure whatsoever. They treated me like family and I would recommend them to all my friends and neighbors.
